VATICAN CITY (CNS) \u2014 The Hamas attack on Israel two years ago \u201cwas inhuman and indefensible,\u201d the Vatican secretary of state said, and Israel\u2019s two-year-long war on Gaza has had \u201cdisastrous and inhuman consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is unacceptable and unjustifiable to reduce human beings to mere \u2018collateral damage\u2019 \u201d in Israel\u2019s stated goal of destroying Hamas, said Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican secretary of state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cardinal was interviewed by Vatican Media on 6 October<\/a>, the eve of the second anniversary of the terrorist attack on Israel and the start of Israel\u2019s massive attack on the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe prayed, and continue to pray, and we continue to ask that this perverse spiral of hatred and violence, which risks dragging us into an abyss with no return, come to an end,\u201d the cardinal said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As first Pope Francis and then Pope Leo have done nearly weekly, Cardinal Parolin also called on Hamas to release the remaining hostages taken on 7 October 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am deeply struck and saddened by the images of these people held prisoner in tunnels, starved,\u201d the cardinal said. \u201cWe cannot and must not forget them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hamas is believed to still have 20 hostages who are alive and the bodies of another 25 or so who died in captivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cardinal told Vatican Media, he prays for the hostages\u2019 families each day and continues \u201cto offer our full availability to do whatever is possible to reunite them with their loved ones alive and safe \u2014 or at least receive the bodies of those who were killed, so that they may be properly buried.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And as Pope Leo did at his jubilee audience on 4 October, Cardinal Parolin condemned increasing signs of antisemitism around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe live in a world of fake news, of oversimplified narratives,\u201d he said. \u201cThis leads people who feed on these distortions to attribute responsibility for what is happening in Gaza to the Jewish people as a whole. But we know that is not true\u201d since many Jews, in Israel and abroad, have protested the Israeli government\u2019s war on Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many also object to how the government has promoted \u201csettler expansionism, often violent,\u201d he said, which \u201cseeks to make the creation of a Palestinian state impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo Jew should be attacked or discriminated against for being Jewish,\u201d Cardinal Parolin said, \u201cand no Palestinian should be attacked or discriminated against simply for being Palestinian, because, as is unfortunately sometimes said, they are \u2018potential terrorists.\u2019 \u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Such a \u201cperverse chain of hatred can only generate a spiral that leads nowhere good,\u201d the cardinal said, adding that \u201cit is painful to see that we still fail to learn from history, even recent history, which remains a teacher of life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked about U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s proposed peace plan, Cardinal Parolin said \u201cany plan that includes the Palestinian people in decisions about their own future and helps put an end to this slaughter \u2014 releasing hostages and halting the daily killing of hundreds of people \u2014 is to be welcomed and supported.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the cardinal expressed frustration at the international community\u2019s seeming inability to act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not enough to say that what is happening is unacceptable and then continue to allow it to happen,\u201d he said. \u201cWe must seriously ask ourselves about the legitimacy, for example, of continuing to supply weapons that are being used against civilians.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cardinal Parolin noted that the Holy See officially recognized the State of Palestine in 2015, continuing its decades-long support of \u201ca Palestinian state that is independent, sovereign, democratic and viable, encompassing the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agreement signed with Palestinian officials \u201cenvisions this state not as opposed to others, but capable of living side by side with its neighbors in peace and security,\u201d the cardinal said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The recognition of Palestine in late September by France, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia was a positive development, Cardinal Parolin said, \u201cbut we note with concern that Israeli declarations and decisions are moving in the opposite direction \u2014 that is, aiming to prevent the possible birth of a real Palestinian state once and for all.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
