{"id":17186,"date":"2025-12-02T16:26:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-02T21:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cnewa.org\/ca\/?p=17186"},"modified":"2025-12-02T19:28:45","modified_gmt":"2025-12-03T00:28:45","slug":"nicene-creed-unites-christians-pope-leo-says-in-turkey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cnewa.org\/ca\/nicene-creed-unites-christians-pope-leo-says-in-turkey\/","title":{"rendered":"Nicene Creed Unites Christians, Pope Leo Says in Turkey"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>IZNIK, Turkey (CNS) \u2014 Although the ancient city of Nicaea lies in ruins and the geographic center of Christianity has shifted West, Pope Leo XIV and Christian leaders gathered at an archaeological site in Turkey to celebrate the enduring faith set out in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cnewa.org\/ca\/pope-issues-apostolic-letter-on-creed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nicene Creed<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople hosted the ecumenical prayer service and the common recitation of the Creed on 28 November at Iznik, site of the ancient Nicaea, about 80 miles southeast of Istanbul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the Greek Orthodox patriarchs of Antioch, Alexandria and Jerusalem or their representatives and with representatives of other Orthodox, Anglican and Protestant churches, Pope Leo marked the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cnewa.org\/ca\/nicaea-an-elusive-goal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 the primary motive for his first foreign trip as pope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The joint recitation of the Creed did not include the phrase known as the \u201cfilioque\u201d \u2014 the statement that the Holy Spirit \u201cproceeds from the Father and the Son\u201d \u2014 since the phrase is not used by the Orthodox because it was inserted into the Latin Creed by Pope Benedict VIII in 1014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent popes, including Pope Benedict XVI, Pope Francis and Pope Leo, have omitted the phrase at ecumenical prayer services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Standing on a platform overlooking the remains of the Basilica of St. Neophytos, now partially submerged in Lake Iznik, the church leaders took turns leading the prayers \u2014 in English, Greek and Arabic \u2014 and lighting candles as a Catholic choir, singing in Latin, and an Orthodox choir, singing in Greek, alternated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/cnewa.org\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/12\/20251128T0930-POPE-NICAEA-18085991-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Ecumenical prayer service overlooking the ruins of an ancient basilica in Iznik.\" class=\"wp-image-17188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cnewa.org\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/12\/20251128T0930-POPE-NICAEA-18085991-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cnewa.org\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/12\/20251128T0930-POPE-NICAEA-18085991-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cnewa.org\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/12\/20251128T0930-POPE-NICAEA-18085991-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cnewa.org\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/12\/20251128T0930-POPE-NICAEA-18085991-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/cnewa.org\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/12\/20251128T0930-POPE-NICAEA-18085991-1600x1067.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/cnewa.org\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/12\/20251128T0930-POPE-NICAEA-18085991.jpg 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Pope Leo XIV joins Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and other Christian leaders for an ecumenical prayer service overlooking the ruins of an ancient basilica in Iznik, Turkey on 28 November. (photo: CNS\/Lola Gomez)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Patriarch Bartholomew, welcoming the pope and other guests, noted that \u201cdespite so many intervening centuries and all the upheavals, difficulties and divisions they have brought, we nevertheless approach this sacred commemoration with shared reverence and a common feeling of hope.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-power-of-this-place-does-not-reside-in-what-passes-away-but-in-what-endures-forever-he-said\">\u201cThe power of this place does not reside in what passes away, but in what endures forever,\u201d he said.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking after the patriarch, Pope Leo told his fellow Christian leaders that at a time when humanity is \u201cafflicted by violence and conflict,\u201d the world \u201cis crying out for reconciliation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe desire for full communion among all believers in Jesus Christ is always accompanied by the search for fraternity among all human beings,\u201d he said. \u201cIn the Nicene Creed, we profess our faith \u2018in one God, the Father.\u2019 Yet, it would not be possible to invoke God as Father if we refused to recognize as brothers and sisters all other men and women, who are created in the image of God.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though united by faith, the Russian Orthodox Church \u2014 the largest of the world\u2019s Eastern Orthodox churches \u2014 was not represented at the service. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cnewa.org\/people-look-east-the-history-between-russia-and-ukraine\/\">Russian church broke relations with the Ecumenical Patriarchate over the recognition in 2018<\/a>&nbsp;of the autonomy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belief in God the father, Pope Leo said in Iznik, means \u201cthere is a universal fraternity of men and women regardless of ethnicity, nationality, religion or personal perspectives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With many of the Christian leaders, especially the Oriental Orthodox, coming from nations that recently faced or are facing war and persecution, Pope Leo said Christians must give concrete witness to their belief that all people are children of one God and therefore brothers and sisters to each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-furthermore-we-must-strongly-reject-the-use-of-religion-for-justifying-war-violence-or-any-form-of-fundamentalism-or-fanaticism-he-said-instead-the-paths-to-follow-are-those-of-fraternal-encounter-dialogue-and-cooperation\">\u201cFurthermore, we must strongly reject the use of religion for justifying war, violence or any form of fundamentalism or fanaticism,\u201d he said. \u201cInstead, the paths to follow are those of fraternal encounter, dialogue and cooperation.\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The pope also repeated a concern he had mentioned during a meeting with Catholic leaders earlier in the day: the risk that many Christians have departed from the Nicene Creed\u2019s firm belief in the divinity of Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis question is especially important for Christians, who risk reducing Jesus Christ to a kind of charismatic leader or superman, a misrepresentation that ultimately leads to sadness and confusion,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time of the Council of Nicaea, the pope said, Arius \u2014 a priest from Alexandria in Egypt \u2014 had denied the divinity of Christ, reducing him to \u201ca mere intermediary between God and humanity, ignoring the reality of the Incarnation such that the divine and the human remained irremediably separated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut if God did not become man, how can mortal creatures participate in his immortal life?\u201d Pope Leo asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pope told the Christian leaders that sharing the same faith in Jesus and being able to recite the Creed together means there \u201cis a profound bond already uniting all Christians.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are all invited to overcome the scandal of the divisions that unfortunately still exist and to nurture the desire for unity for which the Lord Jesus prayed and gave his life,\u201d the pope said. \u201cThe more we are reconciled, the more we Christians can bear credible witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which is a proclamation of hope for all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Patriarch Bartholomew told the leaders that with \u201cthe fervor of the faith of Nicaea burning in our hearts,\u201d they must \u201crun the course\u201d of Christian unity in fulfillment of Jesus\u2019 prayer for the unity of his disciples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd, finally,\u201d the patriarch said, \u201clet us love one another that with one mind we may confess: Father, Son and Holy Spirit \u2014 Trinity consubstantial and undivided.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The previous day, Pope Leo met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, other government officials, members of the diplomatic corps and civic leaders, and told them, \u201cToday, more than ever, we need people who will promote dialogue and practice it with firm will and patient resolve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are now experiencing a phase marked by a heightened level of conflict on the global level, fueled by prevailing strategies of economic and military power,\u201d Pope Leo said. \u201cThis is enabling what Pope Francis called \u2018a third world war fought piecemeal.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe must in no way give in to this,\u201d the pope insisted. \u201cThe future of humanity is at stake.
