{"id":17202,"date":"2025-12-02T18:14:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-02T23:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cnewa.org\/ca\/?p=17202"},"modified":"2025-12-02T23:46:34","modified_gmt":"2025-12-03T04:46:34","slug":"pope-leo-jesus-says-today-i-love-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cnewa.org\/ca\/pope-leo-jesus-says-today-i-love-you\/","title":{"rendered":"Pope Leo: Jesus Says Today \u2018I Love You\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Pope Leo XIV broke a Lebanese taboo when he visited \u201cthe forgotten\u201d at one of the largest psychiatric hospitals in the Middle East and the only one in Lebanon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hospital of the Cross in Jal el\u2011Dib, Lebanon, cares for 800 inpatients across a psychiatry and mental health department, an addictions treatment department, and the Saint-Dominique department, dedicated to children with special needs \u2014 whom Pope Leo visited privately.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The patients and medical staff greeted Pope Leo warmly upon his entrance to the hospital theater on 2 December. Some waved Lebanese flags enthusiastically. One said, \u201cAhlan wa sahlan b Lebnan\u201d (\u201cWelcome to Lebanon\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mother Marie Makhlouf, superior general of the Franciscan Sisters of the Cross, who run the hospital, welcomed the pope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This hospital \u201cdoes not choose its patients, but embraces with love those whom no one has chosen,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cnewa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Sister-Holding-Selfie-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"A religious sister holds a cell phone showing a selfie she took with Pope Leo XVI.\" class=\"wp-image-137082\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Franciscan Sister Rose Hanna, who heads Lebanon&#8217;s Hospital of the Cross, says she hopes Pope Leo XIV&#8217;s visit encourages families of mental health patients to visit.  (photo: Raghida Skaff)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mother Makhlouf thanked Pope Leo for his visit, \u201cwhich tells the world that these forgotten people are not a burden on society, but the treasure of the church.\u201d Tears and emotion caused her to pause her speech several times.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur mission is a daily miracle,\u201d she said. \u201cHow do we continue without support and yet open our doors wider whenever the world closes its doors to those who knock?\u201d she said. \u201cHeaven alone knows the answer.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also conveyed the hope that Blessed Khalil Haddad, who founded the hospital in 1926, will be canonized.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pope Leo told the hospital patients: \u201cYou are in the heart of God our Father. He holds you in his hands, accompanies you with his love, and envelops you with tenderness through the hands and smiles of those who care for you. To each one of you, Jesus says today: \u2018I love you.\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Addressing the medical staff, Pope Leo encouraged them \u201cnot to lose the joy of this mission.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-we-witness-in-this-place-is-a-lesson-for-everyone-for-your-land-and-even-for-all-humanity-he-said\">\u201cWhat we witness in this place is a lesson for everyone, for your land, and even for all humanity,\u201d he said.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Michel Constantin, director of CNEWA-Pontifical Mission\u2019s regional office in Beirut, said the papal visit shed light on the crucial work of the church in Lebanon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe sisters are the only options for the poorest of the poor who live with physical and mental disability in the country,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"576\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/cnewa.org\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/12\/Msgr-and-Michel-scaled1-576x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Michel Constantin, director of CNEWA-Pontifical Mission\u2019s regional office in Beirut, and Msgr. (photo: Raghida Skaff)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDuring the peak of the economic crisis, the hospital faced closing down,\u201d he added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Triggered by a nationwide Ponzi-style collapse centered on the Central Bank, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cnewa.org\/magazine\/sinking-deeper\/\">2019 economic crisis<\/a>&nbsp;hit the hospital hard. The crisis led to staff shortages, depletion of the hospital\u2019s savings and a breakdown in state institutions that crippled the Health Ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Franciscan Sister Rose Hanna, who heads the facility, said \u201cthe situation is now better in terms of accessing the medicines and shortage of staff,\u201d but she noted that the staff is aging, and few young people are willing to undertake such sensitive work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf we offered higher salaries, we could attract and retain them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pope Leo addressed staff challenges: \u201cYour professional presence and your care for the patients are a tangible sign of Christ\u2019s love and compassion.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-you-are-like-the-good-samaritan-who-stopped-at-the-wounded-man-and-cared-for-him-helping-him-and-healing-him-he-said-nbsp\">\u201cYou are like the Good Samaritan who stopped at the wounded man and cared for him, helping him and healing him,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDespite the challenges, keep before your eyes the good that you can accomplish. It is a great work in the eyes of God,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the crisis has eased and Health Ministry payments have resumed, the hospital remains financially fragile, Sister Hanna said. Annual staff costs reach $6 million and operating expenses $4.6 million.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CNEWA\u2013Pontifical Mission has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cnewa.org\/mental-health-care-facility-in-lebanon-struggles-to-keep-afloat\/\">supported the hospital<\/a>&nbsp;since 1997 with subsidies and equipment. In 2024, it contributed $220,000 for a solar installation expected to save $90,000 a year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHopefully, Pope Leo\u2019s visit will bring more funding and charitable people who are willing to support the vital work of this hospital,\u201d Mr. Constantin said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to the pope\u2019s visit, Sister Hanna shared another hope with CNEWA\u2019s ONE magazine: \u201cMany of our patients never receive visitors, as there is still a taboo about psychiatric illnesses in Lebanon, but the visit of the Holy Father could encourage families to visit
