Christians in Gaza must carry forward the spirit of Christmas \u2014 a spirit of light and tenderness \u2014 as they \u201crebuild life\u201d after a devastating two-year war, said Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin patriarch of Jerusalem, on a three-day pastoral visit to the strip, 19-21 December. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cardinal Pizzaballa visited the minority Catholic community in Gaza, the church\u2019s various humanitarian projects, local hospitals, as well as those displaced by the war and sheltered in tents on the seashore. His visit concluded with Sunday Mass and a Christmas celebration at Holy Family Church. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Sunday liturgy included the baptism of a newborn \u2014 an act described by many worshipers as a powerful sign of life amid the rubble. Nine children also received their First Communion. In speaking with reporters in a scrum outside the church on 21 December, Cardinal Pizzaballa underlined the importance of being in Gaza to celebrate Christmas with the small Catholic community. He described his visit as both pastoral and deeply personal, shaped by what he witnessed after months of war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis is my fourth visit after the beginning of the war, and I saw a difference this time,\u201d he said. \u201cI saw the new desire of a new life. I saw, that is, a completely different atmosphere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite the ceasefire and the visible signs of hope and resilience among the Gazan people, the cardinal said Gaza remains trapped in an ongoing humanitarian crisis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are in a new phase, but all the problems are still on the table: housing, schools, hospitals, the conditions of life and the poverty are catastrophic,\u201d he told journalists. \u201cBut it\u2019s time now to look forward and to rebuild all [that] has been devastated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He expressed his appreciation for the way Gazans have lived through their circumstances. Reflecting on the broader political reality, Cardinal Pizzaballa said Gaza\u2019s fate often has been shaped by decisions made by \u201cthe powerful people of the world\u201d far beyond its borders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAt the same time, we saw that the resilience of these people is what [in] the end will prevail,\u201d he said. \u201cFor me, this is a big lesson. Even here, in Gaza \u2014 in the most depressed situation of the world maybe \u2014 it is possible to celebrate Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The cardinal was moved by the presence of many children during his visit. \u201cWhere children are happy, life, the future, is solid,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSo our commitment now is how to [rebuild] from this devastation together, in order to transform Gaza\u201d from \u201cthe most depressed place in the world\u201d to the most vibrant place, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019m confident because, all over the world, Gaza is in the heart of people,\u201d he said. \u201cWherever I go, people ask about Gaza. In response to a question put to him by CNEWA\u2019s ONE<\/em> magazine about the state of Gaza\u2019s Christian community, which numbers less than 1,000 people, the cardinal said the \u201csituation of Christian communities is not that different from all other communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey lost everything,\u201d he said. \u201cThey are living here, as you see, in a very precarious situation. We transformed the churches into housing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the rebuilding, he continued, \u201cwe will focus, first of all, on schools. There is no future without education.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The next priority \u2014 with the help of other aid organizations \u2014 is to support health care, he said. \u201cAnd, as soon as possible, housing,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Inside the church courtyard, celebrations were modest but heartfelt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Khaled Tarzi, 14, compared this year\u2019s gathering with the patriarch with the past two Christmases. \u201cThe celebrations are beautiful,\u201d he told ONE<\/em> magazine. \u201cLast year, because of the war, we did not hold any celebrations. This year, we are celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ with a bigger and more beautiful celebration.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Khaled expressed his simple wish for Christmas \u2014 one he believes is shared by all Gazans: \u201cOur wish is that the war ends safely and peacefully, and that we all survive in peace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\nJulia George Anton, 11, attends the Christmas celebration at Holy Family Church in Gaza on 21 December. Eleven-year-old Julia George Anton said this Christmas feels unlike any she remembers. \u201cThis is the first Christmas we\u2019ve experienced in peace,\u201d she told ONE<\/em>. \u201cThe past two years were during the war. We lived through sadness; homes were destroyed, people were dying.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although decorations and celebrations have returned, Julia said her joy feels incomplete. \u201cWe are happy because it\u2019s the first time we\u2019re celebrating,\u201d she said, \u201cbut our hearts are still heavy with sadness for those we\u2019ve lost, for the homes that were destroyed, and for our friends and relatives whom we no longer see.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cardinal Pizzaballa addressed this tension between hope and grief in his homily at Mass. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThere is no Christmas without birth,\u201d he said, emphasizing that faith is inseparable from responsibility. He spoke of Jesus being born without shelter, drawing parallels with Gaza\u2019s displaced families, and reminded worshippers that \u201cGod\u2019s way is the way of poverty and simplicity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are not only called to build life, but to rebuild it,\u201d he told the congregation. \u201cDuring the war, you became a powerful example of life and light. In this new phase, we must carry this spirit \u2014 the spirit of Christmas \u2014 with its tenderness, its love and its attention to all dimensions of rebuilding, not only buildings, but to life itself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn this new phase you must continue to be the light,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe parish will not be abandoned,\u201d he said. \u201cYou are not alone, and we will rebuild everything again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
