{"id":18321,"date":"2026-09-02T19:16:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-02T23:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cnewa.org\/ca\/?p=18321"},"modified":"2026-09-03T07:19:34","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T11:19:34","slug":"season-of-creation-commences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cnewa.org\/ca\/season-of-creation-commences\/","title":{"rendered":"Season of Creation Commences"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 id=\"h-as-summer-wanes-and-the-harvest-season-begins-throughout-the-northern-hemisphere-christians-worldwide-observe-the-season-of-creation-which-commences-on-the-world-day-of-prayer-for-the-care-of-creation-on-1-september-and-ends-on-the-feast-of-st-francis-of-assisi-4-october-during-this-period-christians-are-reminded-that-our-common-home-is-like-a-sister-with-whom-we-share-our-life-and-a-beautiful-mother-who-opens-her-arms-to-embrace-us-pope-francis-wrote-in-his-2015-encyclical-laudato-si\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">As summer wanes and the harvest season begins throughout the northern hemisphere, Christians worldwide observe the Season of Creation, which commences on the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation on 1 September and ends on the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, 4 October. During this period, Christians are reminded \u201cthat our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us,\u201d Pope Francis wrote in his 2015 encyclical, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/encyclicals\/documents\/papa-francesco_20150524_enciclica-laudato-si.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Laudato si\u2019<\/a>.\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, \u201cthis sister now cries out to us,\u201d the pope continued, \u201cbecause of the harm we have inflicted on her by our irresponsible use and abuse of the goods with which God has endowed her. We have come to see ourselves as her lords and masters, entitled to plunder her at will. The violence present in our hearts, wounded by sin, is also reflected in the symptoms of sickness evident in the soil, in the water, in the air and in all forms of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is why the earth herself, burdened and laid waste, is among the most abandoned and maltreated of our poor; she \u2018groans in travail\u2019 (Rom 8:22). We have forgotten that we ourselves are dust of the earth (cf. Gen 2:7); our very bodies are made up of her elements, we breathe her air and we receive life and refreshment from her waters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the harm that humanity has inflicted on her in the center of our world as believers in the one God, the Holy Land, is particularly egregious \u2014 for those lands are the very lands where \u201cthe Word was made flesh and dwelt among us\u201d (Jn 1:14) \u2014 this devastation of the earth is global. And the consequences of what we have wrought impact us all, from the unpredictable fallout of climate change to mass migration and the forced displacement of humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During this season, CNEWA will feature stories on its blog from throughout the <a href=\"https:\/\/cnewa.org\/ca\/where-we-work\/middle-east\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Middle East<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cnewa.org\/ca\/where-we-work\/northeast-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Northeast Africa<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cnewa.org\/ca\/where-we-work\/india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">India<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cnewa.org\/ca\/where-we-work\/eastern-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eastern Europe<\/a>. These will report on the ecological and environmental circumstances there, the impact of these conditions on the lives of families \u2014 especially the most vulnerable \u2014 and how the church is responding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not all bad news!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thanks to the generosity of CNEWA\u2019s generous friends and benefactors, there\u2019s always reason for hope, as examples of sheer grit, perseverance, fortitude and determination abound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe come together to take charge of this home that has been entrusted to us,\u201d concluded Pope Francis in his encyclical, \u201cknowing that all the good that exists here will be taken up into the heavenly feast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn union with all creatures, we journey through this land seeking God, for \u2018if the world has a beginning and if it has been created, we must enquire who gave it this beginning, and who was its Creator\u2019 [from a homily by St. Basil the Great].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLet us sing as we go.
