At a Moment of Crisis, You Can Be Their Hope

The pandemic is hitting many we serve the hardest. Your gift to our COVID-19 Emergency Fund can help save lives.

The world is confronting a mounting health crisis like no other in modern memory. At this moment, CNEWA is rushing emergency aid to our partners around the globe, beginning with India and Africa, battling to stop the spread of the coronavirus and bring urgent aid to some of the most vulnerable men, women and children we serve.

As critical as the situation is in the United States and Europe, it can be even worse for the poor, the marginalized and the sick. For many, it is literally a matter of life and death.

“We have sent funds — thanks be to God for our generous and loyal donors — to address the extreme hunger that is now devastating some of the most marginalized populations in the countries we serve,” said CNEWA President Msgr. John E. Kozar, highlighting as one example in India the work of Syro-Malankara Catholic Bishop Jacob Mar Barnabas of Gurgaon, New Delhi.

“From their community kitchen, Mar Barnabas, together with priests, sisters, seminarians and volunteers of his eparchy, are preparing hot meals for up to 1,500 people a day,” he said. “Most of those cared for by the bishop are homeless or migrants and most do not qualify for any benefits from the state.”

CNEWA has also deployed emergency funds to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus, providing everything from face masks to disinfectants. “Our partners in Eritrea, Ethiopia and Egypt know exactly where these supplies are needed,” Msgr. Kozar said.

With the crisis changing every day, even every hour, we are monitoring this situation on the ground, as we receive updates from our partners in the field. You can read the latest in our continuing series Voices From the Pandemic on our blog.

As Pope Francis said in his Easter message, “This is not a time for indifference.” CNEWA, responding to the pope’s call to remember the poorest during this crisis, is raising funds and mobilizing resources, partnering with the Holy See, local churches and religious congregations. All funds raised are going to COVID-19 relief — helping, in a particular way, families living in poverty, children and the elderly, as well as people with special needs, refugees and the displaced.

This is a moment when we have all been called to rise and say “Yes” — to stand in solidarity and in charity with our brothers and sisters around the world. Join us and help bring them health and, most importantly, hope.

The world has changed. But our mission hasn’t. We witness the Gospel, bringing the love of Jesus to those who are alone, desperate, frightened or helpless.

We bring help. We bring hope.

We are CNEWA.
