Ethiopia in Crisis
Our team at CNEWA Canada has received troubling news from Ethiopia, where communities already facing hardship are confronting yet another deepening crisis.
Once seen as a symbol of promising growth in Africa, Ethiopia has endured years of conflict, displacement, drought and climate-related challenges. Today, millions of people struggle with hunger and uncertainty.
Argaw Fantu, CNEWA’s regional director in Addis Ababa, has received urgent appeals from local church leaders witnessing growing needs firsthand. More than 10 million people are facing serious food insecurity while communities continue recovering from the devastating drought that affected agricultural production between 2020 and 2023.
The local church in Ethiopia remains a steady source of hope for vulnerable families facing poverty, illness and displacement. Through trusted local partners, CNEWA continues accompanying these communities faithfully, providing assistance and pastoral care to those most in need.
Your generosity helps sustain programs serving some of the country’s most vulnerable people, especially children and the sick. During CNEWA Canada’s visit to Ethiopia, we met children at the Shashemene School for the Blind — a place CNEWA Canada has supported for many years. Despite the hardships surrounding them, the students greeted us with joy, determination and hope. In a country where specialized care and education for blind children are rare, the school offers not only Braille and life skills training, but also dignity, encouragement and a sense of belonging. Your support helps ensure vulnerable children like these continue receiving the care and opportunities they deserve.
But the challenges are growing.
Recent reductions in foreign food assistance have placed even greater strain on families already struggling to meet basic needs. While CNEWA cannot replace large-scale government aid, together through the compassion of Canadian donors like you, we can respond.
Working closely with local church and community partners, CNEWA is helping provide:
- Emergency food assistance
- Supplementary feeding programs for mothers and young children
- Clean water, sanitation support and emergency response services
- Shelter, pastoral care and food support for displaced families
Despite the numerous requests you may be receiving, will you consider making a generous gift today to support our Ethiopian brothers and sisters facing hunger, displacement and uncertainty?
During my solidarity visit to Ethiopia in October 2025, I was deeply moved by the faith and resilience of the people served by the churches there. Meeting families, listening to their stories and witnessing the impact of your compassion made clear just how meaningful your support is.
Please consider supporting these brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ with a gift today.
With gratitude,
