Each year on July 30, and throughout the world, the global community marks the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. This is a key moment for us as an agency to reflect on the dignity of every human life, all while recommitting to fighting a crime which exploits the most vulnerable among us.
Sadly, trafficking in persons is a modern form of slavery that preys on their poverty and desperation. It knows no borders and thrives in silence. As a papal agency committed to human dignity and the protection of the vulnerable, CNEWA Canada stands in solidarity with those working to expose, resist, and heal the wounds of trafficking.
A courageous voice on the frontlines of this important work belongs to Sister Marie Claude Naddaf, a Good Shepherd Sister in Lebanon whose mission has been a beacon of hope for countless women and girls. For decades, Sr. Marie Claude has ministered to survivors of trafficking, domestic violence, and abuse – offering not only shelter and counselling but also profound dignity and a path to move forward in life. In a region strained by economic hardship, continued political instability, and a massive refugee crisis, her work has become even more critical.
In particular and through the Centre for Listening and Guidance, Sr. Naddaf has provided women with the tools to reclaim their lives and break free from cycles of exploitation.
Are you aware? Her story reminds us that fighting trafficking should always be about people, putting aside politics and circumstances. It’s about ensuring that every woman, child, and man is seen, heard, and protected. At CNEWA, we support our partners and frontline workers like Sr. Naddaf who embody the Gospel call to “proclaim liberty to captives.” (Luke 4:18).
On this World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, we renew our commitment to stand with those who are suffering, and to walk alongside those who are making the love and greatness of God visible each day. One rescued life at a time.
