Video: Starvation in Gaza

Mothers are watching their children shrink to skin and bones as the ongoing blockage of Gaza continues. Journalist Diaa Ostaz speaks to people in a Gazan market, where the little food available is too expensive for most people to purchase.

Mozayal Hassuna walks the streets of Gaza, looking for food for her four children. The family has been displaced by the Israeli invasion of Gaza, triggered by Hamas’ attacks on Israel more than 22 months ago. Since March, the Israeli military has closed all crossings into the Gaza Strip.

“I can’t provide a small loaf for the children to eat,” says Ms. Hassuna, whose son tells her she lets him go to bed hungry.

“The famine is great,” says street vendor Ahmed Sawafiry.

“We hope to God that things get better,” he adds.

Dr. Maher Ayyad, medical director of Al-Ahli Hospital, notes people are starving because of the border closures. He, like others interviewed in the video, wants peace.
