Ignace Moussa I Cardinal Daoud, Prefect of the Congregation for the Eastern Churches and Syriac Catholic Patriarch Emeritus of Antioch, visited New York recently to mark the fifth anniversary of the Eparchy of Our Lady of Deliverance for Syriac Catholics in the United States and Canada. During the banquet held on 16 November to mark the event, the Cardinal Prefect gratefully acknowledged CNEWA’s support for the Eastern churches, particularly under the leadership of Msgr. Robert L. Stern, Secretary General.
During the dinner the Eparchy honored Theodore Cardinal McCarrick, Archbishop of Washington, D.C., for his long-time support of the Syriac community in the Archdiocese of Newark, which Cardinal McCarrick once led.
While in New York, Cardinal Daoud, accompanied by Msgr. Maurizio Malvestiti, visited CNEWA’s offices for the first time as Prefect of the Congregation. His Beatitude spoke to Msgr. Stern and Chorbishop John D. Faris, Assistant Secretary General, about the future needs of the Eastern churches.
Bishop Joseph Younan leads the Eparchy of Our Lady of Deliverance from Union City, New Jersey. Syriac Catholic parishes are in California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan and New Jersey.
