CNEWA Canada launches appeal to Help Egypt’s Christians

OTTAWA — Carl Hétu, National Director of CNEWA, is inviting Canadians to support Christian communities in Egypt that since the fall of President Mubarak have been targeted by violent attacks. “For no other reason than their religious identity, extremists have attacked Christians, killing 75 and wounding 800 more, and sacked their properties and churches,” he said. “More than 95,000 Christians left Egypt in 2011.”

This is a crucial moment for the church in Egypt — especially since the 17 March death of the leading Christian voice there, Coptic Orthodox Pope Shenouda III — and CNEWA invites Canadians to be part of the efforts to strengthen the Christian community, especially their schools, seminaries and social service works, like health care clinics. These works of the local churches, which are open to all Egyptians regardless of creed, also reinforce good relations between Christians and Muslims.

Contributions can be sent by mail to CNEWA Canada (marked “Egypt Relief Fund”), 1247 Kilborn Place, Ottawa, Ontario K1H 6K9; by phone 1-866-322-4441; or through CNEWA’s web site, www.cnewa.ca/web/egypt.

CNEWA Canada is mandated by the Holy Father to support the works of the local churches to promote understanding, unity and peace in the Middle East, Northeast Africa, India and Eastern Europe.
