My stay in Debre Berhan was brief but incredibly rewarding, lasting just 24 hours. Known for its high altitude, the city is often windy and cold, adding a unique charm to its atmosphere. Divine Providence School, nestled in Debre Berhan, is a place where the walls are painted with bright colors and the air is filled with the joyful laughter of children.

However, beyond the vibrant walls lies a profound mission to nurture and support children who, without this school, might not have a chance at a brighter future or even a nutritious meal. Ms. Meseret, the director of the elementary school, kindly gave me a tour of each classroom. As I entered, I was warmly greeted by the students and teachers alike.

Every classroom had prepared a song for me when they heard a guest was coming to visit. The rooms were alive with eager faces. As the students sang, their giggles filled the air. For a moment, I forgot all the challenges outside those walls. It was a reminder that at Divine Providence School joy is a daily practice and hope is always within reach.

In one of the kindergarten classes, a little boy named Daniel, just 8 years old, caught my eye. He sat in the front row, his tiny hands gripping a pencil almost as big as his smile. I called him over and we had a chat about how school was going. He told me his favorite meals are the injera with stew and the macaroni that the school serves for lunch.

The school’s feeding program is nothing short of miraculous. The children’s eyes light up as they receive their warm meals. For many, this might be the only nutritious food they get all day.

I watched as they ate, chatting excitedly about their favorite subjects and what they wanted to be when they grew up. Doctors, teachers and even pilots. It was clear that these meals were not just filling their bellies, but also fueling their dreams. As I walked out of the school gates, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to witness such pure, unfiltered joy and for the incredible work being done by the sisters and staff.
