“I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26)
These were the words spoken by Jesus to Martha after the death of Lazarus, her brother and Jesus’ friend.
Early on Monday within the Octave of Easter, we all learned of the passage of Pope Francis into the fullness of eternal life. While we mourn his death, we are consoled by the end of his suffering, and we are filled with the radiance and hope of Easter for him!
I believe that we all recognize in Pope Francis a pope of Gospel simplicity, mercy, compassion, hope and dialogue, for everyone. He cared for all — especially the most vulnerable, the weak, victims of all forms of injustice, the migrant and the voiceless. He prayed and labored ceaselessly for justice and peace throughout the world.
We are all aware of his great devotion to the Blessed Mother. He has expressed the wish to be buried in the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome. I invite you to pray to Mary, Mother of Jesus, and to St. Ignatius of Loyola. May their powerful intercession accompany Pope Francis.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace!
Respectfully,
