Interfaith Dialogue

WASHINGTON (CNS) — Religious leaders and young adults from Catholic, Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim and Sikh traditions will meet for a day of dialogue and interreligious exchange at the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington Nov. 19.

The daylong event, “Generations of Faith — an Interreligious Encounter,” will feature intergenerational dialogue in a variety of formats. It will conclude with an evening reception and presentation that will be open to the public and news media.

Archbishop Felix Machado of Vasai, India, former undersecretary of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, is scheduled to deliver a morning keynote address followed by group discussions, a plenary session and more group discussions.

Other religious leaders scheduled to participate in the event include: Bishop Tod D. Brown of Orange, Calif.; Anuttama Dasa, director of communications for the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, based in the Washington suburb of Potomac, Md.; Manohar Singh Grewal, past president of the World Sikh Council, American region, which is based in Columbus, Ohio; Ohun Chung Lee, who has represented Won Buddhist International at the United Nations; Sayyid Syeed, national director of the Office for Interfaith and Community Alliances for the Islamic Society of America, based in Plainfield, Ind.; and Rabbi Jeffrey Wohlberg, senior rabbi emeritus of Congregation Adas Israel in Washington.

An evening introductory session and dinner for young adult participants is planned for Nov. 18.

The U.S. bishops’ Secretariat for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs and the cultural center are co-sponsoring the interreligious event.
