His Eminence Terence Cardinal Cooke, president of The Catholic Near East Welfare Association for the past 15 years died on October 6, 1983.

As a staunch defender of the poor and neglected people of the Near East, Cardinal Cooke expressed his concern not only in guiding statements but in frequent visits to the region.

His compassion for the oppressed of the Near East was an inspiration to all whose who knew him.
