Jerusalem’s Patriarchs

Formerly the Greek Orthodox exarch of the Holy Sepulchre in Qatar, Theophilos III was elected the 141st patriarch of the church of Jerusalem in 2005. The “mother of all churches,” the patriarchate shepherds Greek OrthodoxChristians in Jerusalem, Israel, Palestine, Jordan and the Arabian Peninsula.

The Armenian Apostolic Patriarchate of Jerusalem, led by Patriarch Torkom II, is centered at the St. James Monastery in the heart of the Old City’s Armenian Quarter. The patriarch is responsible for the holy places and life of the church throughout Israel, Jordan and Palestine.

Since 2008, Archbishop Fouad Twal, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, has guided Roman Catholics living in Jerusalem and Cyprus, Israel, Palestine and Jordan. The patriarch has supported the church’s many charitable efforts, especially in education, health care and social assistance.
