For decades, CNEWA has supported the church of Mukachevo, which is the mother of the Greek Catholic churches in Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and in the present-day Subcarpathian region of Ukraine. This support has included the formation of priests and religious sisters and other pastoral programs. Most recently, CNEWA has supported the humanitarian relief efforts sponsored by the Eparchy of Mukachevo for Ukrainians displaced by the Russian invasion.
The following video highlights the multiyear restoration of the historic iconostasis in the eparchy’s Holy Cross Cathedral. In the churches of the Byzantine tradition, the iconostasis, or icon screen, separates the sanctuary, where the Divine Mysteries are celebrated, from the nave. This particular iconostasis, which dates to the 18th century, is considered a unique and important artistic monument in Central Europe.
