Report on Tsunami Relief

Below please find a complete accounting of funds collected by CNEWA for the victims of the December 2004 tsunami.

  • Built 163 houses for homeless families in the southern states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu = $807,080
  • Provided bicycles, books, school supplies and tuition fees for 331 children in the regions of Azheekal, Colachel and Kanyakumari = $42,970
  • Purchased a school bus for a Catholic school in Colachel for children scattered with their families after the tsunami = $17,700
  • Purchased 24 modest-sized boats, each of which will be shared by 2 families who rely on fishing, in the village of Kottilpadu = $ 40,000
  • Purchased 3 large fishing boats, to be shared by 12 families, in Kottilpadu = $12,340
  • Stocked/Built assorted shops (tea, vegetables, dry goods), a tailor shop, fishing nets and a telephone booth in the village of Azheekal = $10,745
  • Provided an auto-rickshaw for Mr. Benzair in Azheekal = $1,570
  • Installed 5 sheds for mushroom cultivation, employing 5 families in the village of Devanipattinam = $565
  • Furnished and supplied an orphanage built by the Bethany Sisters for 60 children orphaned by the tsunami = $25,000
  • Laid pipe lines for clean drinking water for 74 families in the village of Moottandithopu = $7,000

Total = $964,970
