The Catholic Women’s League of Canada had its 2024 National Convention in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, 11-14 August, and CNEWA was honored to respond to the invitation to present its work.
A testimonial from Dr. Adriana Bara, National Director of CNEWA Canada
Participating in an event for the first time is always a unique and enriching experience, but my recent participation at the national convention of the Canada Women’s League (C.W.L.) took this to an entirely new level. As I reflect on this meaningful experience, I am excited to share how the C.W.L.’s dedication to supporting CNEWA is making a significant impact in Israel and Palestine.
A Journey of Generosity and Purpose
The Canada Women’s League is renowned for its unwavering commitment to charitable causes, particularly those that align with Catholic values.
From the moment I arrived at the event, it was clear that this was more than just a gathering – it was a celebration of compassion and solidarity. The atmosphere was filled with a sense of purpose, as members of the C.W.L. came together to contribute to causes larger than themselves.
You can watch the recording of the presentation CNEWA made at the convention at the end of this blog post.
The C.W.L. currently supports two projects in the Holy Land in cooperation with CNEWA: the Shepherd’s Field Hospital in Beit Sahour, near Bethlehem in the West Bank, and the Infant Welfare Center, located in the Old City of Jerusalem.
An update from Joseph Hazboun, Regional Director of the CNEWA Jerusalem
Shepherd’s Field Hospital
Your continual support gives essential health care to pregnant women in need and monitors the health and development of more than 100 babies each year. This is done by providing blood tests and important supplements, such as iron and vitamin D, and essential maternal health care for very poor families. The hospital also provides health education and postpartum consultation for mothers.

“I was overwhelmed with feelings of fear and anxiety but with the help of the medical staff here, I felt comfortable as if I were at home, my second home. The nurses, midwives and doctor were very good. They also guided me on what I needed to do in the first three months after birth.” – Helen Rafael, patient, Beit Sahour Cooperative Society for Health Welfare
Infant Welfare Center
The Infant Welfare Center was closed for a year and a half due to severe restrictions and three lockdowns in Jerusalem, which had a negative effect on children’s well-being. The staff adapted and found ways to improve the mental health of children and their parents, which included workshops for parents with a counselor and hands-on activities for kids, like cooking, science experiments and more. The center also resumed its remedial education programs, focusing on academic support for teens.
“The programs provides really vital support for these young families that are struggling to remain steadfast in the home of their ancestors, in their home which is the Holy Land where Jesus was born. And this is the important service that we are providing thanks to the finance and support of the CWL.” – Joseph Hazboun, Regional Director of the CNEWA Jerusalem Field Office.
