Beit Mariam, an after-school center run by the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary on the periphery of Amman, Jordan, ensures that vulnerable girls have a space to flourish in their faith, education and community. Through moral and psychological support, tutoring, counseling and a variety of creative activities, the girls are carving a better path forward.
“Sister Rabha teaches us so many things, like gardening,” said Marita Haddad, a beneficiary. “I feel very happy when I see my plant grow.”
“I want to come here all the time,” she said.
Many of the girls come from situations of poverty and neglect, so the center provides space and resources to support them.
“Poverty is one of the main factors that cause many family problems,” said Sister Rabha Kayrouz, F.M.M., director of Beit Mariam. “Girls are the most vulnerable.”
“Even if it doesn’t show now, in the future these girls will teach others what they have learned here,” said Lorice Haddad, supervisor of Beit Mariam.
