Students in the 10th-grade section of Sunday school at St. Thomas the Apostle Syro-Malabar Catholic Cathedral in Chicago’s west suburbs raised more than $3,000 toward CNEWA’s humanitarian efforts in Ukraine. Led by their teachers, Joe Kanikunnel and Nisha Eric, the students held a bake sale after the Holy Qurbana on 20 March.
With news of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the students wanted to support families and young people in Ukraine, explained Abin Kuriakose, a lifelong parishioner of the cathedral parish and chair of CNEWA’s inaugural associate board.
“As Syro-Malabar Catholics, they wanted to show their solidarity for fellow Eastern Catholics in Ukraine, like the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church,” he said.
The bake sale was themed in honor of St. Patrick’s Day.
The students invited Mr. Kuriakose and fellow CNEWA associate board member Mariya Kokor of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Greek Catholic Eparchy of Chicago to visit the class and learn more about CNEWA and the situation in Ukraine in the coming weeks.
