In India, many Catholic institutions help the poorest of the poor, identifying people the government might not help.
For instance, leaders of the Syro-Malabar Eparchy of Palaghat visit poor families and offer scholarships to young women to study nursing, a profession that can help lift their families out of poverty.
In the village of Pulluvazhy, Sister Jisa Paul, I.J., founded Snehajyothi Charitable Society, which serves 108 residents, most of them orphan boys and girls.
“Since we currently do not receive any government grants, the institution is able to move forward and meet its financial needs only through the help of kind-hearted people,” says Sister Jisa.
“We have reached a situation where we cannot run our institution without CNEWA’s support,” she says.
In this video, meet some of the people CNEWA helps. Read more about their situations in “Ending the Poverty Loop,” in the June issue of ONE.
